Should I Leave My Thermostat Fan on AUTO or ON?

This is one of the most common thermostat questions homeowners ask: should the fan be set to AUTO or ON?

For most Central Texas homes, AUTO is the better default. But there are tradeoffs, and understanding them can help you decide what makes sense for your house.

Simple rule: AUTO is usually the best default for efficiency and humidity comfort. ON can help with air mixing, but it is a tradeoff rather than a universal upgrade.

What AUTO Means

When the fan is on AUTO, it runs when the system is actively heating or cooling and shuts off when that cycle ends. For most homeowners, that is the cleanest and most efficient starting point.

Why AUTO Is Usually Better

AUTO usually means less blower runtime, less unnecessary air movement, and better default humidity performance in cooling season. It is often the safest “set it and leave it” choice.

When ON Can Make Sense

Some homeowners use ON because they want more air circulation, more filtration time, or better temperature mixing between rooms. In some systems, that may help with certain comfort complaints.

ON Does Not Fix a Bad Airflow Problem

If you feel like you need ON all the time because certain rooms are uncomfortable, the real issue may be airflow, duct design, filter restriction, or system sizing. Fan mode can sometimes hide the symptom without solving the cause.

Humidity Is the Big Tradeoff

In humid weather, this is the main reason many contractors prefer AUTO as the default. More fan runtime is not always the same thing as better comfort.

Greg says: “For most homes around here, AUTO is the safe default. If somebody is using ON all the time, I usually want to know what problem they’re trying to solve.”
